The First International Symposium on Artemisia: a resounding success

The first international symposium on Artemisia was held from 8 to 10 October 2025 in Arusha, Tanzania, co-organised by Aga Khan University and the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). This was a historic step towards scientific recognition of this plant, known for its effectiveness against malaria and other diseases, as well as for its applications in animal health and sustainable agriculture.

Symposium Artemisia, Arusha

It was a first, and this international symposium on Artemisia was held in the beautiful setting of Aga Khan University in Arusha. More than a hundred researchers, health professionals, veterinarians and agricultural engineers from all continents attended.

Three days of discussion and discovery

Over the course of three days, scientific sessions and practical case studies followed one another in a cross-disciplinary approach. This was a unique format, with lectures held at the university as well as practical demonstrations on the grounds of ACER and in the Artemisia fields dedicated to horticultural research.

Concrete advances for science and the field

These three days provided an opportunity to:

  • exchange scientific research findings on Artemisia annua and afra in human and animal health
  • share clinical case studies presented by doctors
  • explore the plant’s potential in the face of growing resistance to malaria treatments
  • highlight its essential role in the treatment of parasitic diseases as a One Health solution
  • promote its use as an alternative to chemical pesticides
  • discover the practical experiences of actors in the social and solidarity economy, who presented the plant’s impact on sustainable farming and on strengthening communities.

New perspectives for global health

As a result, new perspectives for global health have emerged, highlighting the importance of translating science into concrete solutions.
The goal is now:

  • accelerate and increase the number of scientific studies;
  • fuel discussion and encourage continuous sharing of advances within the community and with decision-makers.
Symposium Artemisia

An actively engaged community and a dynamic network

This symposium has united the participants and created a community that has been able to forge connections.

Bridges were built between people, disciplines and continents. In the wake of this first edition, Artemisia Connect will now keep this dynamic network alive, organise regular online sessions, share scientific updates and promote open discussion between researchers, practitioners and stakeholders in the field. So get connected.

Together, let’s grow the movement for global, sustainable health that is accessible to all.
