World Malaria Day
25 April is World Malaria Day. An opportunity to remember the impact of this disease and that local solutions exist!
Some figures:
- 3 billion people live in malarious areas, i.e. half the population.
- 247 million cases in 2021 according to the WHO (95% of cases in Africa).
- 619,000 deaths in 2021, 80% of which will be African children under the age of 5.
- Emergence of resistance to insecticides and drugs.
- Causes 30% of school and work absenteeism.
- Estimated real cost of 1.3 percentage points of growth for Africa each year.
The theme of today’s Day is: It’s time to deliver zero malaria.
INVEST, INNOVATE, IMPLEMENT
This is what the Maison de l’Artemisia has been doing for 10 years!
INVEST in Artemisia research,
INNOVATE with Artemisia tea, a local solution, inexpensive and accessible to all,
IMPLEMENT with the creation of the Artemisia Houses.
La Maison de l’Artemisia is a worldwide network (130 Houses of Artemisia in 28 countries) with a humanitarian vocation allowing a better knowledge of medicinal plants (in particular Artemisia annua and afra) to fight against malaria and other diseases by promoting micro-economic development through the creation of local and sustainable industries.
In France, the humanitarian association (law 1901), created at the end of 2012 by Lucile Cornet-Vernet, has three missions:
- Accelerating research on Artemisia tea, an ancient treatment for malaria
- Oversee its sustainable dissemination in malaria endemic countries through Houses of Artemisia, local centres of expertise, which coordinate knowledge and distribution of the plant.
- Animating the global community of committed people and change agents interested in Artemisia.
Throughout the week, numerous conferences, radio and TV broadcasts, awareness-raising activities and herbal tea distributions will take place throughout the network of 130 Artemisia Houses.
To continue to raise awareness of this local, inexpensive and accessible solution to the greatest number of people in order to deliver Zero Malaria.
